Should I get my Quaker Parrot a friend?

Question by Mechellie Yellie Ellie: Should I get my Quaker Parrot a friend?
Lately, my bird has been streesed and started to pluck her feathers. Are Quaker Parrots social birds? Will she be less stressed if she has a companion?. Because i dont always see her. And she gets lonely.

Answer by skydanzer400
How do you know she is stressed? If she is plucking, there are only two basic reasons for it. It’s a health issue or she is stressed and/or bored. Any time a bird starts to pluck, they must go for a check up with a good Avian vet. Many health problems cause them to pluck. If she has a health issue, you will be wasting your and her time by trying to address it in any other way. Also, you would not want to bring a new bird into your home if you are not positive of the health status of both birds. (If and when you do ever get another, make sure to keep it in quarantine at least 30 days, as far from your original bird as possible.) Once you have gotten a clean bill of health from the vet, then you can approach the problem from a behavioral stand point. Did you know that Quakers are weaver birds? Many people do not realize that. Make sure she has plenty of toys and make sure there are lots of safe shredding items included. Go to a dollar store and pick up a big bag of plastic drinking straws. Give her one or two only, at first. Let her check them out since they can be spooked by new things. Once she starts playing with them, give her several. She will probably start weaving them in and out of her cage bars. She may end up making some really elaborate structures. In the wild, their homes have several rooms and even front porches. She can have plain white paper towels to shred. If you can find spools of plain white adding machine tape, string them on clean cotton twine and hang in the cage. There are lots of cheap or free, home made things you can come up with to keep her entertained. But the bottom line is, she needs a lot of attention and interaction from you. Birds are flock creatures. When we take them away from their flocks and into our homes, we must become their replacement flock. If she is not getting all the attention she needs from you, you are fighting a losing battle and it might be better for her to find her a home with someone who has the time she requires. That’s not just Quakers, it’s all parrots. They take a huge amount of our time and if we cannot give it or are not willing to give it, it’s the bird that suffers. I hope this helps you out some.

8 week old quaker parrot? what to feed him?

Question by Lauren: 8 week old quaker parrot? what to feed him?
Ive read everywhere that i need to switch him from a seed diet to a natural (non colored) pellet diet with seeds as a treat. Hes totally use to his new home, and is beak grinding and purring at me. I got him and he was on all seed diet. Ive been trying to switch him over to pellets (parakeet, because the cockateil pellets are too big, and he was having trouble getting them down) and he seems to pick around the parakeet pellets and only eat the seeds that ive mixed into the pellets. Am i doing this wrong? And is this the right food to move him to? He seems very happy and content, i just dont want him to get liver disease by letting him eat seeds 24/7. Also, what fruits/veggies/human food should i give him? i want to make sure hes getting all the nutritian he needs. Thanks a bunch =)

I am leaving town ( vacation ) for six days next week and I am leaving my quaker parrot alone for that time.?

Question by mhouston34: I am leaving town ( vacation ) for six days next week and I am leaving my quaker parrot alone for that time.?
Any suggestions on how to make this absence easier on my bird. She really loves attention and is a very happy bird. She’s tame and is usually let out of here cage daily. We just moved into a new house and we aren’t quite comfortable enough with the neighbors to have them watch her. What should we do? We have some timers that wil make the radio and lights come on and off at diifferent times. What else should we do?

Button Quails Button Quails!! : D?

Question by Eljay Taylor: Button Quails Button Quails!! : D?
Hi,
I am researching and considering raising button quails. I have a great deal of experience with birds, so I have an idea of what I am getting into. I have two cockatiels and a quaker parrot, and have taken in sick birds quite often. I just wanted to know some first hand experience from owners, tell me a little about what they are like. I’d also like to get some price ranges please!
Thanks!!! : )

I have some friends who have had button quail so I can tell you about them. They are fairly quiet birds that like to stay on the ground. Button quail are often afraid of the dark and can panic and get injured. There needs to be enough light for them to see to prevent this from happening. You’ll also need soft padding in the quail’s cage to prevent injury. Button quail will eat finch seed, hard-boiled eggs which are chopped up into tiny pieces, dry canary food, shredded greens, and thawed mixed vegetables. They will also eat insects. Button quail require grit to digest their food, as they don’t hull their seeds like most other pet birds. Button quail can be kept in an aviary with most species of finches. They can bond with their owners.

Here is an excellent link to button quails that has plenty of information:

Quaker parrot questions Moving to a lower elevation?

Question by jon: Quaker parrot questions Moving to a lower elevation?
Well I am considering moving from Colorado to Nevada. I live at about 5000 feet and I will be moving to about 2000 feet. Will this elevation change bother my quaker parrot?

Also my parrot has plucked out almost all of his feather except for his wings which I was told by a vet is because he is lonely and stressed out. I am the only person that he doesn’t bite so I am the only one to give him any attention, and I don’t have the time to give him as much attention as I should. I have thought about finding him another home but I was told once they get attached to someone they will never warm up to anybody else. Is this true? I got him when he was only a few months old and he has been my friend for the last ten years so I really hate to give him up but I want to do whats best for him. So should I keep him or find some one that can give him the attention he needs?

Answer by Mickey Dee
No that is not true they can bond again I have had MANY older birds in my home that love us now .The best thing is to find him a new home someone who has had quakers that can give him enough time to bond and not push him .He needs alot of one on one time new toys some fresh foods and if you can not give that them please do find him a good new home .I would not try an sell him but then again people are all looking for thet free bird so you really have to do your home work ask alot of questions make sure they have had a quaker before see how long they have had a bird longer the better!! ask how many toys should a parrot have the size of a cage **LOTS OF TOYS** and bigger the better for cage.you want this to be the last home !!do not give to anyone who breeds them!!! and do not give to anyone who has never had one before!!! Good luck!!
