a few questions about my quaker parrot; experienced parrot parents only please…?
Question by jedonite: a few questions about my quaker parrot; experienced parrot parents only please…?
Alfie the quaker parrot is fairly well behaved and knows how to entertain herself. (i assume she is female)
please try to answer all the questions:
Why does Alfie prefer women over men?
Why does she scream when she flies?
She is tame enough to let me touch all of her body including under her wings but she refuses to hold on to my finger with both feet at the same time; she only grabs on with one at a time and is reluctant to hold on with both simultaneously. How can i get her to hold on with both?
Alfie is skiddish… she gets scared at the smallest things sometimes which results with her flying in a screaming frenzy, going to her cage and hiding in her happy hut. she gets scared if i don’t knock, if i pick up a large object, etc.
how can i get her to be more brave and trusting?

Why does Alfie prefer women over men?
Some birds are just that way. Some like men over women.
Why does she scream when she flies?
Again, some birds are like that. I’ve had three Quakers in my lifetime and they did it sometimes and sometimes they didn’t.
Unless she’s perching, she prefers using one foot to hold onto you with. It lets her feel secure holding onto something steady with at least one foot.
You really can’t make her less skittish. Birds only have two means of protecting themselves — biting and flying away from the danger. If her wings were clipped, she’d be less likely to fly to her cage and hide.
I don’t know how safe your house is, but if you carry her around with you while you’re doing other things, she’ll get used to different sounds and sights.
My three caiques aren’t afraid of ANYTHING — mainly because they’re allowed into every area of my apartment (I live alone and have no other pets, so it’s relatively safe).

Is My Quaker Parrot ill? I had him since August 14th, for 47 days and he hasn’t make any sounds?
Question by Altair_Gimmik: Is My Quaker Parrot ill? I had him since August 14th, for 47 days and he hasn’t make any sounds?
My Quaker Parrot (Kyo) is a sweet loveing bird and he doesn’t bite, but the parts that worrys me is that when I got him 47 days ago, he seems not to be active. All he doe’s is sit on top of his cage in a corner and sleep and puff up most of the time, He sneezes constantly when he wakes up. His nose gets wet and he seems bored all the time.
When I first got him he had a siezure and that frighten me because I thought he was going to die. I think from that he has these problems and I wish he can be active.
The Family loves him and all but we all want him to talk to us.
OH, He has bad gripping. So I have to hold him like how you position your arm like your holding a baby, thats how I hold him cause if I have him on my shoulder and walk around he will fall off or have him on my finger.
So can anyone please help me?
I don’t have the money to take him to the Vet right now and I just need HUGE Advice, anything. I want my sweet lovely Kyo to be Healthy.

He is VERY sick. If you take him to an avain vet they migh be able to work out a payment plan that will work for you. If you can’t this week surrender him to a SPCA so they can care for him. Sorry that’s all I can say =(

Round I FIGHT!
***WARNING!!*** You may see a BLOODY fight! ….nah, just kidding! Anyway, this is the fight we’ve all been waiting for. Well, I let them out of their cage so they can run around and play but it looks to me that they go some issues and are settling the score! Parrots featuring::: Dulce and Terremoto (my lil monsters who like to chew up everything they can get in their beaks) Don’t worry, they didn’t bit each other that badly they were just play fighting and they really enjoy their little rumble. It’s all fun and innocent play, nothing serious. If I knew there was something serious I would’ve intervene immediately, I’ve already seen just how mean they can be towards my adult quakers (Rocco and Cammy) so yeah. These little guys are still young and they LOVE to play. Have fun!

Please I need some information on Quaker parrot?
Question by electric_90: Please I need some information on Quaker parrot?
Hello sorry for the bad English, I had an Quaker parrot before but recently died at age 1 1/2 years old :( on January 5, 2009 because I didn’t knew about them getting liver disease easily by eating seeds only. I have purchased an Quaker parrot from petland on the same day 1/5/09 because I felt soo lonely and sad. His name is Polly and he/she still didn’t get used to me yet it been over 3 weeks but I have patience to wait it isn’t an hurry :) I always play with him and try to communicate with him. I also took him to the vet for check up and also his gender test. I feed him fresh vegetables such as carrots, Cauliflower, Broccoli, and hot peppers. I also give him fruits such as oranges, Apples, and Bananas. I sometimes give him cheerios also and everyday I also give him fresh apple juice. I also put their parrot mix (seeds) I know is unhealthy for them but I did some research that I have to put seeds in their cage. I clean his cage every night before going to sleep and cover his cage with blanket at 9:30pm or sometimes 10:30pm. Can you please tell me if I am doing great or bad I want to make my Polly healthy and safe. If their is something else I can do please let me know

Sounds like your doing a good jon. Pellets should be added to the mixture. In his cage you can mix then in with the seed mixture. I also give my CAG nut mixture without salt. Polly should be able to step up and come out of the cage by now if you have been working with her everyday. Sounds like Polly will be a good companion for many years to come.

Xico Sings!

Our Quaker Parrot, Xico, was too shy and moved too much for still photos, so we decided to record him singing his little Xico song! Does anyone else’s QP have a song like this? In addition to singing, mumbling and muttering things to himself, he also says, “Good boooy,” “Step up,” and “kiss kiss.” On rare occassions, he even says, “How’s it going?” We adopted him one year ago from a family who couldn’t take care of him, and he has improved in condition a lot!

My Quaker Parrot bit the crap out of me one day. Now im affraid to hold him again!! know of any suggestions??
Question by KIM-dobie owner: My Quaker Parrot bit the crap out of me one day. Now im affraid to hold him again!! know of any suggestions??
i have a Male quaker parrot, named Willy. he is about 6 years old. we got him when he was about 4. and he was the sweetest bird, until he got use to our home. then he would nibble and bite kind of hard. and i would tell him No. But i would keep hanging onto him anyway, and he would be good for a while, but then he would bite again, but not to hard. then one day, i went to take him out of his cage to hang onto him (after i just got done spraying myself with perfume). and he started freaking out, and almost literally attacking me. he would bite the hand that i was holding him in, then he would bite my other hand, so i put him on my shirt, and he kept biting my shirt as he was walking towards my face. lol. so ever since then, im affraid to hold him, because even though he has a small beak, he has a pretty tough BITE! does anyone know of a way that i can handle him, or try to get him to be more tame to where he wont bite???? he is affraid of gloves, so that wont work!! thank you everyone!!
thank you all for your opinions!! its honestly hard to choose who has the best answer, because you all do!!!
if anyone has any more suggestion, please keep them comming!! thank you al!!

Do you ever let him sit on a flat surface and scratch the back of his head and back. Every time my daughters Ring neck got like that she would set him on a table and scratch his back. It seems that as new feathers come in it takes a while to shed the pinfeather shell and that made him cranky just like your bird sounds.
You have to be patient and persistent while he settles down.
