Can I feed my budgies some pellet for, “cockatiels and other small birds”?
Question by Excella Gionne Love: Can I feed my budgies some pellet for, “cockatiels and other small birds”?
I have two budgies and I want to make sure they have a really healthy diet. I was planning on giving them some pellet but I’m not sure if they can eat it… On the bag it says, “cockatiels, Quaker parakeets, ringneck parakeets, love birds, Meyer’s parrots and other small parrots.” So can my budgies aka parakeets eat some of this??? Here is the what it looks like – http://s.petco.com/Assets/product_images/0/062177922004C.jpg Maybe I would need to break it into smaller bits? I dunno, please help! Thanks! (I don’t need a list of things I need to include. I know I need to include other stuff like fruits and veggies etc.) I’m just asking about the pellet. Thank you.

If your birds are feeding on seed, fruit and veg greens ,then there is no need to give them pellets,Cuttle bone and a Mineral block are good for them .
There will be no need to crush them but you can , the only problem you may have is that they may prefer seed to pellets and you will have wasted your cash.

What are some good small parrots for pets?
Question by Mithie: What are some good small parrots for pets?
I am planning to buy another bird. Well.. A small parrot. What kind of parrots are the best pets? (The small ones) Like.. An amazon, green quaker, cockatiel, etc. So, which is the best one? I an going to do a lot of research on them before i get them. I am NOT that kind of person who just goes off and buys a bird.
So, which is the best kind of small parrot to have as a pet?
When you give me your opinion, be sure to include if they are good talkers, what diet they have, how many times to bathe them, how many times to clean their cage, what to feed them, etc.
AND ALSO! Some people have asked me what happened to my cockatiel, and it is fine! I love her, She is doing great. I did NOT give her away cause of the noise, because she barely makes any noise! Anyways I try to make it sing instead of not to. So don’t worry about the cockatiel, I love her and I will never give her up.
AND BE SURE TO INCLUDE THAT IF THE BIRD YOU CHOOSE FOR ME CAN BE WITH A COCKATIEL OR NOT! THANK YOU

Have you, or anyone you know, found a bird?
Question by Retta: Have you, or anyone you know, found a bird?
I am a volunteer with 911 Parrot Alert, an international group dedicated to reuniting lost companion birds with their people. Your ‘FOUND’ ad has been cross-posted to our 911 Parrot Alert lost and found bird database. We have over 70,000 listings for lost and found birds, organized by location, type and date. This is a free service provided by volunteers with a passion for parrots.
As you probably already know, a bird can fly up to 50 miles a day and/or be transported by car. We just found a Cockatiel that was more then 50 miles from home that was lost for 2 months, a Quaker parrot lost for 7 months 40 miles from home, an African Grey lost for 8 months found 2000 miles from home (transported by car). Don’t be shocked. You may be contacted by people that are not in your town. If it is their bird they will have a picture or some type of identification to prove it.
Please also remember it can take a minimum of 3 days for a “lost” ad to appear in local newspapers. The owner is most likely looking for their bird, but you haven’t seen the ad yet.
If you do not have bird experience, or cannot keep this bird until the owner is located, please let me know. A 911 Parrot Alert volunteer will house the bird in a foster home in the area with one of our volunteers while looking for the owner. We are dedicated to reuniting these birds with their owners.
If you are not able to identify the type use this link for reference http://www.parrotparrot.com/articles/species.html .
For anyone trying to reunite a pigeon, here is the link:
http://www.pigeon.org/lostbirdinfo.htm or
http://www.npausa.com/foundpigeon.htm
Warning, you most likely will receive several calls from people saying ‘I’ll take the bird if you can’t find the owner’. If you decide to foster the bird yourself, please give it a few months before you let someone adopt it. We just reunited an African grey with its owner that was looking for him for 7 months. People go on vacation or go in the hospital and the birds caretakers accidentally let them out. The owners return and are devastated to find their bird gone. They are even more devastated to find that their bird has been given away without the chance of them to find them.
Also, please note, Birds require very special diets. They can be killed by many simple household items, such as Teflon, aerosols, ceiling fans, just to name a few. If you do decide to foster the bird we can give recommendations to help you.
Remember, it is not “Just a Bird”, it is a feathered kid….. The owners’ feelings of guilt and helplessness are common. Depression is not uncommon. Many people spend years trying to find them. Please bear in mind it can take weeks or months to locate the owner.
Please complete the Found Bird form at the bottom of this email and return it to me or use the form at the www.911parrotalert.com web site..
With this information we can help watch for ‘lost bird’ ads that come into your area.
Our site includes a list of resources, where you can search for matching “lost” birds in your area, or post a “found” ad for your bird. Also included is a list of tips for agencies to contact.
Please feel free to visit our site & sign up for the ‘yahoo group’ to search our database for possible ‘lost’ matches. Lost and found birds are added day and night. Members receive email notifications several times a day of all birds lost & found each day. Make sure to choose “daily digest” when you sign up. This is a free service.

911 Parrot Alert is NOT a scam or advertisement. We are volunteers that look for lost and found birds on Craigs List, BirdMart.com, BirdHotline.com, etc. We cross post to our web site which is a legitimate non-profit organization founded in 2004.
I have Google alerts set up for lost/found pet birds. I got an alert for a post on this website about someone who found a Rainbow Lorikeet. See below..
“Why does my bird do this?
(Rainbow lorrakie) My bird flew into my neighbours yard and they don’t like birds. So me and my family took him and now hes our birdy :). But since the month started he has been chirping, rubbing his head against my finger. feet and neck and he has also been doing a chirpy song with a little dance. So please help im wondering why he is doing it but my family thinks it is a mating thing.
Thankyou”

Any vets in ohio that will look at my bird?!?! I know it’s long; but please read.?
Question by Elena R: Any vets in ohio that will look at my bird?!?! I know it’s long; but please read.?
I recently acquired a Quaker parrot who I was told has Fatty Liver disease.
I don’t really know anything about the disease; but I did know that basically all you could do was change his diet and give exercise.
Now; I was also told he came from an abused home.
His lower mandible is cracked and to the side almost..And his upper is kinda long; even though he just got it trimmed. BUT; who I got him from told me that this was because of Fatty Liver; not abuse..But I’m not so sure anymore because his toenails and beak are not growing back very fast at all. She told me that they’d start growing in about a month again..It’s been a month and he looks fine. So I’m starting to question whether he even has Fatty Liver.
But my big problem is; I need a vet that has the ability to test for it.
And there aren’t a lot of those in Ohio.
Could someone maybe give me some advice? I’ve called every vet in my phone book and nobody will look at him. I called Dr. Riggs..And they told me exactly this “Well, we have someone who knows all about the disease, but he won’t sit down and talk to you about it on the phone. You need to make an appointment.”
And I thought that was sort of rude to do.. He could at least tell me if they can test for it.
Anyway; if someone could give me a list of vets that will look at him; that would be great.
Or if someone could call their vet that looks at their birds and ask them what they think; that would be nice, too. Or at least tell me what I can do for him. Thank you!
I’ve had quakers, I just never had one with this disease.

take him to an avian vet – vets like most humans aren’t mind readers – they can’t see what’s going on over the phone – make an appointment – this website will help you locate one
start reading up on Quakers so you can properly care for, tame, check for signs for illness, etc

What is the best first bird to get?
Question by : What is the best first bird to get?
I have been doing a lot of research as I would like to get a bird. I like the chatter of birds and my brother had one that I really liked when we were growing up. I am rather open regarding what type, and was looking at a quaker parrot, but thought perhaps I should start small and work my way up. I then started looking at parakeets and found that it seems as far as diet and stuff it appears to be similar to the quaker parrot in terms of difficulty level. I also read about teflon being a problem, which I had no clue that heating teflon could kill a bird! Which bird is a good one to start with and are there any other things I need to be aware of?

Answer by Christina K
Parakeets are great birds, and I have one. They can be messy at times, but they are very amusing, funny, and mine even dances to certain songs when I play them! You should know to always feed your parakeet (AKA budgie) fruits and vegetables, but be sure to look up what kinds to give them, because some, (such as avocados) can kill your bird. Also, some fruits and vegetables have pesticides on them that can kill your bird, so be sure to thoroughly rinse your fruits and veggies before giving them to your bird. I hope this helps and good luck!
