“Another volcano” Camaccounting’s photos around Turrialba, Costa Rica

Entry from: Turrialba, Costa Rica Entry Title: “Another volcano.” Entry: “Got up early and went up to the main house to use the Internet while everyone was getting ready. Checked my email and got some depressing news. Renee, my house sitter, told me that one of my parrots got out of his cage in the aviary and had died. If any of the larger birds that are in cages get out the smaller ones attack them. She said that he was on the side of one of the big enclosed areas and she couldn’t reach him. I could not understand what she was talking about at all. I asked that she get help and told her where to bury him. She also told me that one of my quakers, Sammy had gotten out of his cage on the back porch and had flown away. Sammy is my favorite small bird. She usually comes back to me but I’m not sure if she will come to Renee. Hope she is still around in two weeks. Dodger, the bird that died, is Don’s favorite. I am not going to tell Don until we get back but he’s going to know something is wrong. Went to McDonald’s for breakfast. Sara cannot believe they had blacks beans and rice on the menu for breakfast. Robby had a tortilla and they had stamped it like a soccer ball. And of course soccer was on the tvs with those awful horns. First McDonald’s I have seen with flat screens all over. Hit a road block

Best answer:

Answer by Steph D
Take him to a avian vet if worried. I am not familar with Quackers(they are illegal in georgia). But I do know many breeders are having issues with kaytee formula. Many have stopped using it as some have lost birds.

Quaker Parrot who gets red puffy like under eyes and seems weaker?

Question by 3P.C.O.: Quaker Parrot who gets red puffy like under eyes and seems weaker?
Kiku is my Quaker Parrot and I have had him for 7 years. At least twice out of those 7 years, he has gotten sickly looking but it only last 2 days. Under his eyes it gets red and puffy looking and he seems really weak almost and I want to say his feathers are usually fluffed out. Can anyone tell me what he might have been going through? When it happens I get so sad for him and just want to cuddle up w/ him and I don’t no what to do. I have given him warm baths and a towel to cuddle up in with me afterwards. Then it just stops after 2 days never lasts longer then that.

He has not gone through this anymore and is not sick now, but would just like to know to prevent or to help him if it does come back…..its a mystery to me.
nope their is no discharge anywhere….and like I said it last 2 days at the most thats not very long to be sick….and light pink under the eyes.

(has not had these symptoms for at least a year)

Answer by Melissa M
Birds CAN be so sensitive so Yes he might be sick because of the clipping! Keep an eye on him. Make sure that he eats and drinks… He should come around.

He might be mad at you too… taking your clipping personally. Birds can hold grudges… one or two of mine do. It should not be a bad experience but they do sometimes hold it against you.

Cockatiel and Cockatiels – Bathing Your Bird – How to Give a Bird a Bath – Bathing Pet Birds

The Rules of Bathing While various bathing methods abound, there are a few simple rules that apply to bathing all pet birds: Use only plain, clear water. Although some pet supply companies market commercial “bird shampoos”, the best and safest way to bathe your bird is with plain water. Birds produce a special oil that they preen their feathers with, and this oil can be stripped through the use of soaps or detergents. This can result in unhealthy feathers and unhappy birds. Only bathe your bird during the warmest part of the day. Wet birds easily get chilled, which can be a serious health hazard. Bathe your bird during a warm part of the day so that your bird’s feathers have a chance to dry completely before the temperature drops towards nightfall. Make sure the water is a comfortable temperature. Water that is too hot or cold can shock a bird’s system, not to mention causing burns and a host of other serious conditions. Always check the temperature of the water before offering your bird a bath. Many birds prefer their bath water to be lukewarm or room temperature. Never saturate your bird’s feathers. In the wild, birds never allow their feathers to become completely soaked through. This can lead to loss of body heat and flight impairment. Except in extreme circumstances, it should never be necessary to completely soak a pet bird. If you always follow these simple rules of bathing, you can ensure that bathtime for your pet will be a safe activity, no matter which bathing

Is my parrot sick?

Question by “Nitro”: Is my parrot sick?
I live at home with my parents and I was out of town over the weekend. I have a Quaker Parrot and he only likes me and my mother. When I came home the other day, i found feathers all over his cage. He’d pick all the feathers off of his legs and little bit under his tail. He hasn’t been very active either. He’ll still step up, eat, and snuggle like always, but he’s been very quiet and sleepy. Is he just stressed from me leaving or something else. Or is he sick? He’s only 3 yrs. old.

By the time you realize a bird is sick it’s usually to late! They hide sickness in the wild because it shows they are weak. If you have any doubts get him to the Vet ASAP! It should be a Vet trained for birds. My guess is he was stressed by you being out of town, but better to have him checked! I lost mine at 15 from a liver disease. My friend has one that’s almost 30 yrs old and she has plucked most of her feathers down her chest out! Best of luck!!
