maybe its stress, if birds are stressed they can pull their feathers out my mums bird used to do it and the vets said it was down to stress, maybe the other quaker is making it stressed. or the quaker could have a simple skin or feather infection that needs looking at, id suggest you ring the vets and ask advice there its free :-D

Question by tranixter: Why is my Quaker parrot losing feathers?
I have a 6 month old Quaker parrot and I noticed in the past week that she is starting to loose a few feathers. On her back she looks just spit bathed, but on her chest she has a small bald spot and all few feathers seem loose (if you will) they are all ruffled up. Why is this?
is it
molting.
plucking
her being sick (she does not have diarrhea)
a cold
what is it,
thanks for you help
She is not acting any different than before, but she does seem a little clumsy.
She is a month off of the normal molting schedule, but it is her first molt so im sure it is okay right?

Well I’ve heard that parrots molt. I think she’s molting her feathers to grow new, fresh, clean, gorgeous feathers!

Question by Dhyanwa: How can I stop my quaker pulling out her feathers?? :( Please read!!!?
Hi, Im 13 and own a 2 year old quaker parrot who is a great bird. She has just started picking out her feathers when we got another dog who she is very afraid of. We moved her cage so that she doesn’t have to see the dog anymore and that really helped. All of her feathers started growing back. Now suddenly, she has started to pick them out worse than before. I am really worried about her and need help. Is there anything I can do? I know there are other things that cause feather plucking. She is definitely stressed but maybe she is bored to? I just went back to school and haven’t been able to get her out as much. She has lots of toys in her cage and I rearrange them and take them out and in sometimes and buy her new ones. She just like playing.
Thanks for any helpful advice.
I do get her out everyday. Usually at night when I get home from school. I know stress and loneliness is bad. I just don’t know what to do.
I know you said get a friend. My parents don’t want to get another one. Neither do I. Unless we NEED to get one for her. Of course we would. But we want to do anything we can before we have to buy another bird.

If you arent spending enough time with her , and on top of it shes stressed….yeah thats causing the feather pulling. If your sure her cage in in a good place now, buy her some new toys. Try if you have time before bed to take her out for at least a half hour. Try to make it a habit, and she should get used to the new time schedule as far as playing goes. If that doesnt work, or your too busy with school, you may have to get her a friend :/ Sorry to say, but loneliness and stress is really bad for your bird. you need to fix it ASAP!

** Yeah, reread it a bit more thoroughly. I say she needs a friend!!! If the toys arent working and you moved her. Its either find the time for her, or get her a buddy. Sometimes leaving the TV on while leaving or music playing helps a lot, but sometimes only another bird helps.

My quaker parrot has diaharea & feathers are puffed out. What do I do? no change in eating habbits.?

Question by holly C: My quaker parrot has diaharea & feathers are puffed out. What do I do? no change in eating habbits.?
Could it be her diet? she otherwise has been acting normal.

Are you positive it’s diarrhea? If her diet hasn’t changed any than she shouldn’t have it. Unless you have had her with contact with other birds. You may have to take her to an avian vet. We have a quaker ourselves and have had her for 9 years now, her stool can be runny at times but honestly when they pee it seems like runny poop. So it can easily be mistaken as diarrhea. Feathers fluffed out mean she is either a little chilly and can also mean she’s showing who is boss. But either one is normal. We have our quaker and our african grey on a pellet diet along with some seed and lots of veggies and fruits. I love the zupreem pellets, they smell really good too lol.

How do I get dried formula off my baby bird’s feathers?!?

When I picked up my new baby Quaker Parrot, the breeder apparently did an aweful job at cleaning her up after she was being handfed. She’s got dried “baby food” around her beak and neck, and I’ve tried holding a warm, wet paper towel to it to “loosen it up” with no success. Any ideas?!

How can I stop my bird from plucking her feathers?

Category: Toys

I own a quaker parrot and she keeps plucking her feathers. I keep a few bells and toys in her cage for her to play with but she doesn’t really use them. How can I stop her from plucking her feathers? I’ve heard that putting things like cardboard toilet paper rolls and paper cups and things like that would help…Is it safe though?

What dose it mean when my quaker parrot fluffs up his feathers?

I am a First Time bird owner and i just recently got a quaker parrot on November 15 and i was told not to take him out for the first week or so so he can get used to his surroundings. So i was talking to him and he Fluffed up and chirped i thought it was cute but i hope it doesn’t means that he hates me! can some one tell me what it means?

How can I nurse back to health a Quaker parrot that plucks it’s feathers?

Category: Health

My in-laws have a quaker parrot that they are giving me. The bird has really taken to me and is such a sweet bird. I’ve got a lot of time on my hands, and the parrot can get a lot more attention around me. The parrot has plucked out a lot of it’s feathers, and from what I’ve read online they can do that if they are stressed, etc. I was wondering what some ways are to possibly get the bird to stop plucking and grow her feathers back. She will be getting a ton of attention here, so I know that will help, but any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
